Leaves and Light

The CI-710 Miniature Leaf Spectrometer

Understanding the way that light and chemicals interact is one of the most basic desires of human beings. “Why is the sky blue?” we wonder from an early age.

Light is reflected, absorbed, and transmitted across the visible spectrum and we see this manifested all around us. The fact that so many leaves are green tells us that chlorophyll must be a significant compound!

The CI-710 Miniature Leaf Spectrometer offers a non-destructive way to measure the pigments and optical properties of leaves using one of three different measurement modes: transmission (light passing through the leaf), absorbance (light being absorbed in the leaf) and reflectance (light reflecting from the leaf surface).

A fiber optic cable directs light to the leaf surface. Light is dispersed to the spectrometer by a diffraction grating and is then projected onto a CCD array where each pixel corresponds to a specific wavelength of light. The spectrometer relates the measurement data to our SpectraSnap! software which displays the light intensity across a visible light spectrum of 400-900 nm in real time and also saves the data for further analysis.

The CI-710 Miniature Leaf Spectrometer is applied by plant physiology researchers around the world to monitor the status of nutrient uptake by plants, track changes in chemical content or concentration in plant organs, measure biomass changes with respect to the environmental parameters, and detect plant diseases.

CID still needs your vote!

Last month we told you about our opportunity to earn a $100,000 grant from Mission Main Street Grants, but we still need a few more votes to reach 250 by June 19!

Thank you so much for helping us meet our target by Friday, June 19, 2015. Click here to cast your vote today!

Tips from Tech Support

What if there is a strong presence of stray light when I'm using the CI-710?

Make sure that the sample covers the entire measurement area. If the sample is thick, adjust the leaf clip to accommodate. Use an opaque black backing in reflectance mode (such as the backside of the reflectance standard), and make sure you use your hand to cover the leaf clip and sample while taking a measurement.
